1) Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
For more than 20 years, thousands of newbies have used Cunningham's personable, gentle guide to master the basics of Wicca. From setting up an altar and dedicating yourself to the path, to Wiccan ethics and celebrating the Wheel of the Year, Cunningham offers direction without rigidity.
2) The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess
Written by Bay Area witch and activist Starhawk, The Spiral Dance is part history text, part instruction manual, and all heart. It includes a history of Goddess religions throughout the ages, a Goddess-centered creation myth, examinations of the God and Goddess archetypes, as well as exercises, invocations, chants, and rituals.
3) Drawing Down the Moon
Margot Adler's book is one of the seminal works for the neopagan movement. This was the first time a writer had taken a journalistic approach to the phenomenon of the revival of interest in earth-centered spirituality. Originally published in 1979, it's been revised and expanded since.
4) The Witches' Goddess: The Feminine Principle of Divinity
Wiccan scholars Janet and Stewart Farrar blow apart the stereotype of the fluffy, amorphous Goddess-worshipper with this well-researched, well-written exploration of the Goddess in her different guises and archetypes. Includes 13 ritual invocations for Goddesses from throughout the world, and a listing of more than 1000 Goddess-incarnations worldwide.
5) The Witches' God: The Masculine Principle of Divinity
In this companion to The Witches' Goddess (see above), the Farrars explore the masculine archetypes of the God and his incarnation throughout the ages, including the Sacrificed God, the God of the Hunt, the Son/Lover God, the Vegetation God, and the Grass Widower. As with its companion piece, this book includes invocations and a listing of more than 1000 Gods from cultures throughout the world.
